The Howard Hughes Corp. unveiled a vivid blue geometrical sculpture by artist Rafael Barrios in its Hughes Landing lifestyle development in The Woodlands.
Acrobática, crafted of steel and acrylic lacquer and weighing 1,760 pounds, represents the sixth piece of public, outdoor art in Hughes Landing and the 58th overall for The Woodlands. It can be seen at Hughes Landing Boulevard and Constellation Point Drive near the Embassy Suites by Hilton.
"Acrobática creates a mirage of images. As one walks by perpendicular to the sculpture, the shapes appear to move and rotate at the connections," Howard Hughes Corp. vice president of planning and director of The Woodlands Art Fund Robert Heineman said in a statement.
"These transformations are optical illusions that successfully engage the viewer and elevate the sculpture from pure art to include a bit of magic."
Barrios created a similar, smaller sculpture in the lobby at The Westin at The Woodlands.
Heineman worked with Kinzelman Art Consulting on the selection along with Howard Hughes Corp. executive vice president of strategic development Peter Doyle.
"Our vision for Hughes Landing is to simply add dramatic and beautiful pieces of art to this urban, walkable setting. Acrobática complements the contemporary outdoor sculptures currently in Hughes Landing and helps enhance the splendid pieces throughout The Woodlands," Doyle said.
This fall, art benches will be installed near The Woodlands Waterway, adding to 14 already in place.
